| Abstract: | This dissertation looks at the concept of island-to-island tourism, with a focus on Gozitan residents who travel to mainland Malta for tourism related purposes. The two islands form part of the same small country; yet this study shows how Gozitan residents visualize Malta as a different place to visit, offering experiences which are currently absent in Gozo. For the research a mixed-methods approach was utilized, consisting of questionnaires with Gozitan residents and interviews with Gozitan stakeholders. The study investigates the reasons why Gozitan residents choose to travel to mainland Malta, the frequency patterns and what type of activities they engage with during their visit. The research also looks at the practical side of these visits, such as transportation and accommodation issues. The findings of the study reveal that many Gozitan residents travel to mainland Malta for events, shopping, nightlife, dining and cultural activities. For some individuals, these trips to mainland Malta are short getaways; for others, they are an opportunity to enjoy experiences which are absent in Gozo. This study adds to the understanding of domestic tourism, especially in small island contexts. Eventually the study reveals that, even within one small scale country, people can visualize different islands as separate tourism destinations. |
