| Abstract: | Despite its long-standing prominence in mythological, literary, and religious thought, the theological significance of the sea within Christian tradition has received comparatively limited systematic attention. This article seeks to address that gap by examining the sea as a symbolic and theological locus through a reading of the Matthean account of Peter walking on the water, set alongside Rembrandt’s Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee. In this study, the sea is understood not merely as a physical backdrop but as a site where human fragility, divine presence, and spiritual transformation converge. The argument is developed through five interrelated themes: the sea as a space of freedom disclosed by faith; the sea as a threshold of mystery marking the boundary between the known and the unknown; the sea as an image of the believer’s inward journey; the sea as a formative environment shaping both identity and discipleship; and the sea as a figure of humanity’s desire for the infinite, expressed in the movement toward Christ. Together, these themes suggest that maritime imagery offers a distinctive conceptual framework for interpreting the dynamics of faith and the contours of Christian spiritual experience. |
