| Abstract: | This dissertation discusses the influence which Morality and Ethics have on Public Governance, particularly in high level decision making. Being in a position of power, especially when elected to govern, imposes a great responsibility on the incumbent to take those decisions which must strive to achieve the common good and guided by the right moral compass. Throughout the centuries, such dilemmas have left their mark on mankind, and many have contributed from as far back as 500 BC. Modern theory has also addressed these issues and although the socio-political scenarios have evolved, the basic fundamental principles remain the same. The underpinnings of the modern theories of Virtue Ethics of MacIntyre and the Integrity in Public Governance by Huberts offer a rather clear path which public administrators could follow. Two case studies are discussed within this scenario and shortcomings are identified. At the end of day, the common good must always prevail, even if the situation involves a Prime Minister, his actions and behaviour. |
