Abstract: | The main aim of this study was to investigate how the reality of bullying in Maltese state primary schools is perceived by guidance teachers, as it affects the related parties, and what can be done to contain it. A sample of 44 guidance teachers was chosen at random. The main tool for this quantitative study was a self-administered questionnaire. Additionally, a few questions provided participants with the option to further explain their answer, thus also integrating some qualitative features to the study. Results indicate how 51% of the participants agreed that bullying cases are commonly reported in primary schools. Additionally, 21% of guidance teachers strongly agree with the fact that a school with an anti-bullying policy has fewer reports of bullying cases. Present findings have also shown that there is a great need for more awareness about the phenomenon of bullying in schools, especially due to its numerous consequences on both victim and perpetrator. Raising awareness will result in a number of benefits, including helping children become knowledgeable about the actions, approaches and feelings related to bullying. Moreover, the results highlighted how having a positive school environment is an important characteristic in order to combat bullying in schools and limit bullying actions. |
