Abstract: This study explores the effects of marital conflict on children and what the role of the educator is in providing support to children who are in distress as a result of marital conflict. For this study, the local context was put into perspective as a means of examining whether society is conscious of the effects of marital conflict on children and what initiatives are underway to safeguard children from the effects of marital conflict. Through the method of narrative inquiry and an analysis of the literature, results indicate that marital conflict can be both constructive and destructive in relation to children’s adjustment styles, relationships, health, behaviour and school achievement. As findings indicate, when conflict is dealt with effectively, children obtain constructive forms of conflict and thus begin to show responsibility and maturity. On the contrary, when conflict is dealt with unfavourably, the experience of marital conflict for children is regarded as the most difficult time in their lives. Therefore, conflict is considered to be harmful on the basis of the nature of the conflict and the way couples settle differences. In all of this, the educator stands as a pillar of support for the child who requires comfort and support during a time marked by continuous insecurity.
