| Abstract: | The mission of Pope Francis as Bishop of Rome and Universal Pastor came to an end on Easter Monday, 21 April 2025. Contemporary society has been able to witness his strong convictions and dogged determination to clean the proverbial Augean stables, particularly within certain sections of the Church. From the start of his pontificate, Francis has been crystal clear in the way he envisages the Church as the community of the whole People of God. In doing so, he has reminded us of the principles of the ecclesiology enshrined in the documents of the Second Vatican Council, especially Lumen gentium (LG) and Gaudium et spes (GS). In so doing, he has – knowingly or unknowingly – taken us on a journey of ressourcement of patristic ecclesiology. This contribution seeks to evaluate one model of the Church which was expressed by Francis from the start of his mission in March 2013, namely that of the Church operating as a field hospital.
