Abstract: This study explored the primary school experience of three children with autism through their parents’ eyes. The research aimed at shedding light about these children’s experiences, highlighting the various strengths and shortcomings of primary school education for students on the spectrum. Semi-structured interviews were the main research tool used in this project. These interviews revealed first-hand information regarding the need for more awareness about autism within schools and teaching staff, and showed that there are still challenges which need to be overcome in order for the education of children with autism to be of a better quality. On the other hand, it was found that both parents and children were positively affected by empathetic, caring educators and learning support assistants, who went out of their way to promote inclusion and socialisation. The aim of this study was to acknowledge these positive aspects, so that they would be enhanced and the primary school experience for children with autism would be improved. To this end, a number of recommendations about improving the primary school experience of children with autism are also given.
