| Abstract: | The quest to understand what stimulates voluntary pro-environmental cooperation has garnered considerable interest in behavioural environmental economics, not least because of the recognition that fiscal and regulatory measures can incur prohibitive political risks. However, it is increasingly evident that political preferences are a material consideration in stimulating voluntary participation. This study makes a contribution to the evolving literature on political preferences and pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) by assessing this relationship across diverse domains (waste, energy use and biodiversity) and by testing the potential role of various political preferences: political interest, voting patterns, attitudes towards intervention and trust in government at the municipal, national and supranational level.
