Abstract: On January 24, 1823, sombre tidings spread across the is lands as news broke of the unexpected passing of sculptor Mariano Gerada (1711-1823) from Cospicua. Gerada, a highly prolific Maltese sculptor, deviated from the prevailing artistic trends of the time (centred in Rome) and chose to pursue his studies in Valencia, Spain. Back in Malta, he demonstrated exceptional skill in his artistic pursuits. Vincenzo Caruana Gatto, in his Saggio Apologetico, wrote that “Mariano Gerada excelled... in the quantity and perfection of sacred subjects... his natural talent was truly admirable in this regard”.
