Abstract: It is not often that a book that is not available in the English language is reviewed in Small States & Territories. But this becomes quite necessary when a book targets an exceptionally specific topic, about which little may be written. This is the case with this volume by Dr Jean- Christophe Gay (JCG), a French geographer who has dedicated many years to looking at that part of France beyond the ‘hexagon’, scattered in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans, vestiges of empire.
