Abstract: Despite its abundant natural resources, cycles of economic growth, and extensive policy reform, why have Latin America and the Caribbean grappled with achieving sustainable economic development? This question supplies the foundation to The Elgar Companion to the Economies of Latin America and the Caribbean. Rather than pushing a single explanation, the Companion ties together scholars from economics, political science, economic history, and development studies to analyse the historical, institutional, political, and social forces that have molded the region’s economic trajectory. By doing so, the Companion serves as both a comprehensive reference work and makes a sizeable contribution to arguments on development in the Latin American and Caribbean regions.
