Abstract: The purpose of this research is to determine the evaluation and architectural influences of the quadripartite ribbed cross-vaults particularly the early vaults mainly found in the harbour areas, Rabat and Zejtun and that of later vaults in Valletta. The intention of this dissertation is to seek and determine whether the construction of the quadripartite rib vaults of particular buildings are related by construction and style. For the purpose of this dissertation some buildings have been selected which have quadripartite ribbed cross-vaults and will undertake structural comparisons between the following buildings: St Anne’s Church Fort St Angelo, a part of the nunnery complex of Santa Scholastica and the now destroyed Santa Scholastica doorway, the surviving-courtyard of the Inquisitor’s palace, Birgu, the cloister of the Franciscan Minor Observants, Rabat, the old Church of St Nicholas, Siġġiewi , the old church of St Catherine, Zejtun, the surviving-courtyard of the Lombard Bank Annex of Spinola Palace, the Magazine Ward at the Holy Infirmary, Valletta and Palazzo Mangion, Mdina. The study of buildings undertaken is one of understanding the construction methods and building practice. Understanding the stereotomy of buildings might give a better idea as to whether there was an exchange of ideas and masonry techniques. This dissertation will also look into the Rhodiot connection and take into consideration whether ideas were possibly imported from Rhodes, neighbouring Sicily or Spain. A conclusion will deal with a clear chronology and will explain why the quadripartite ribbed cross-vaults fell out of use. This thesis will introduce the reader to the construction methods used by the Order between in the early 16th and mid 17th century. Finally a conclusion will establish whether the dawn of Baroque architecture determined the demise of the quadripartite ribbed cross-vaults.
