Title: | An analysis on the history of alchemical philosophy through artistic experimentation and its influence on contemporary art |
Authors: | Farrugia, Matthew |
Keywords: | Alchemy in art Ceramics -- Malta Art, Modern -- 21st century |
Issue Date: | 2016 |
Abstract: | The aim for this research was the involvement of specific alchemical theories, which were practiced mainly in the late 16th century, and their involvement with contemporary art, not just through an academic historical context, but also through a practice-based approach. This study will involve alchemical formulas and knowledge, which will be put to the test through an artistic based scenario, and an attempt to deduce the main assimilations, which these two arts share and which would eventually create a higher art form. It also aims to include local artists in this study in order to show that alchemical knowledge has also been implemented in Malta through artists, mainly working in installation form, as well as in ceramics such as those by Austin Camilleri and Gabriel Caruana. Publications from specific international writers who explain the logic within the alchemical theories and their attributes on contemporary art have been analysed carefully so as to create an understanding between the correlation of these two studies which join to create one specific goal, „the Fifth Element‟. This research proved to be challenging and demanding because of the ancient philosophical text, which needed to be translated into common text in order to be understood first by the researcher and eventually by the reader. Thus a decision can be made on whether or not the theories put forward in this study are plausible or, better yet, confirmed. |
