Issue Date: 2016
Abstract: This dissertation is an attempt to use the Theory of Proxemics, and other non-verbal communication theories, in order to create an interactive piece of product design; a bench. This bench is to serve as a form of installation art that users can interact with and experience. Qualitative research was used in this dissertation. In order to apply said theories to the local context direct observations were made, which were then used in order to facilitate a creative process. The final piece is a bench design that allows users to either approach the piece and choose their preferred proxemic distance, or to allow the bench’s shape to affect their own communication with others.
