Being in time : a practical visualisation of subjective perception and experience of time and memory within three-dimensional space

Abstract

This dissertation revolves around the exploration and representation of subjective time and memory perception, through the use of sound and space. The project presents an interactive three-dimensional space, containing background noise in the form of a pre-recorded ambient loop, where visitors may choose to talk into directional microphones, having their voices digitally echoed and delayed into suspended, immersive head chambers, the former acting as a container to being and occurring in the present and the latter acting as a container to recollection and being in the past. The creation process is an application of the relation between interdisciplinary context reviewing that spans philosophies and theories surrounding time, sound and space alongside personal experience of such sentiments and discussion with other individuals and practitioners. This is a manifestation of the rhizomatic and meaningful interplay between present and past in the form and texture of such modulated, delayed sound, all of which being a reflection and manifestation of the flow and disposition of accumulating, teetering moments and resultant memories.
