Abstract: The proceedings of a symposium under the title "Is there a common educational core in Surgery in all its branches?” held by the International Federation of Surgical Colleges in Barcelona in 1973 are presented. Topics discussed during the symposium were in relation to surgeon`s specialization and specialized surgery, non-surgical training, and integrated surgical training. Furthermore, questions whether all surgeons need to be qualified general surgeons are debated. Of particular importance was the discussion on the interpretation and description of full time training and on granting the specialist qualifications.
