| Abstract: | This research explores the trajectories experienced by 7 Maltese perpetrators of intimate partner violence and the impact the contingencies experienced in such trajectories may have on the abusive career path. Qualitative data, based on in-depth interviews, were analysed using a Grounded Theory approach (Charmaz, 2006). The influence that the participants’ childhood experiences, family of origin interactions, school experiences, and intimate relationship dynamics may have had on their career as a perpetrator of intimate partner violence were explored. The development of violent behaviour towards their intimate partner, changes in their identity and social cognitive mechanisms concomitant with the progression of their aggressive actions, were also explored. Finally trajectories and contingencies experienced in such trajectories supporting the desistence of the abusive career were explored. An analysis of the data from a psychological perspective and main findings are presented in the discussion. Recommendations for practice, policy and future research based on the findings of this study are presented in the concluding chapter. |
