Abstract: This study explores the way in which Maltese mothers of young children and adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) construct their sons’ disability. Their constructions are investigated from the point of view of the existing Medical and Social theoretical frameworks of disability. A qualitative research design was adopted, making use of semi-structured interviews with eight mothers who have a son with an ASC – four whose son is 4 to 6 years old and four whose son is 12 to 16 years old. Thematic Analysis of data shows that in trying to construct their sons’ ASC, these mothers negotiate between the Medical and the Social Models of disability. They adapt acquired medical knowledge strategically, in such a way that they can challenge ‘normality’ as they promote their sons’ uniqueness and individuality and entitlement to equal treatment and adapted services. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.
