Abstract: This study aims at exploring how lower limb amputees experience the impact of amputation on their self-identity. The implications these experiences may have on the counselling profession are also discussed. A qualitative research strategy based on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was adopted to capture the descriptions and meanings of each participant’s experience of amputation. Hermeneutic phenomenology was identified as the best way to allow participants interpret their experiences. In addition to this, the philosophical underpinning of the social model focused on the need of participants to be helped to empower themselves and to take control of their disability. Six participants were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. Apart from purposive and criterion sampling, snow ball sampling was also used for better recruitment of participants. Six super-ordinate themes were identified describing the emotions and bereavement process as well as issues of control and trauma which the participants experienced as a result of amputation. Moreover, through re-negotiation of identity, participants explored different ways of perceiving and giving meaning to their experience. Finally, family and social support including the role of professionals showed how their contribution helped in the process of adjustment. Findings revealed that changes in self-identity do occur with participants experiencing both positive and negative changes in self-identity. Moreover, the counselling profession proved to have been crucial in helping lower limb amputees find ways of coping with their loss and with changes in self-identity. Recommendations for education, policy and practice and future research were presented including the strengths and limitations of the study. Ethical principles used in counseling research were also taken into consideration.
