| Abstract: | The question of whether insularity or islandness is a blessing or a curse is not easy to answer. Sociological studies show that it can be either, for different people at different times. This essay explores the nature of islandness from a sociological perspective, highlighting the various aspects that make island life at the same time alluring and off-putting, and suggesting how Nissology, the scientific study of island life, can be employed as a very useful vantage point to understand the human spirit. |
