| Abstract: | This study aimed to explore the personal experience of living with a spouse or partner suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to gain an in-depth understanding of the true meaning of this experience. It also aimed to understand the types of coping strategies adopted by spouses. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with two participants (one male, one female) using a case study approach. Both participants were married to someone who was suffering from OCD. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Four super-ordinate themes are presented in this study: ‘Bearing the consequences of living with a spouse suffering from OCD’, ‘Lack of understanding and support’, ‘Coping Strategies’ and ‘Coming to terms with spouse’s condition’. Many findings emerged from these themes. Taking care of their ill spouse was considered a burden and created tension for the individual as well as for the whole family. Participants experienced a general lack of understanding from others about what OCD entails as well as a lack of support from others. One participant also reported that stigma related to mental illness still exists. The participants adopted several coping strategies to help them cope with the daily stress they endured. Finally, ways of coming to terms with the illness were also explored. The participants both reported the need for more awareness about OCD and more support for spouses and other caregivers. These and other findings are discussed in relation to literature and recommendations for future research are also given. |
