Eschatology
Issue Date: 2017
Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to explore the ways in which the apocalypse has been conceived throughout history, both as part of religious beliefs and mythology as well as in different types of art forms. I will be investigating the way the apocalypse has been rendered in literary texts from the English literature canon and comparing these portrayals to those found in more recent renderings by movies and videogames. In the first chapter, I will be exploring various aspects of apocalypticism and eschatology, tracing the influence of the apocalypse across religion and mythology, literature and media. In the second chapter, I shall be exploring in detail the Final Fantasy videogame franchise by Square Enix and how it portrays different versions of the apocalypse throughout its titles. For this endeavour, I have selected two particular titles from the series: Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Type-0, which I will be commenting on in detail. Additionally, I will be comparing the renditions of the apocalypse in these two games with those found in literature, religion and mythology. Finally, in the third chapter I will focus on the alternate endings and scenarios which the player may unlock in the above mentioned videogames and what effect gameplay might have on the apocalyptic events throughout the game’s story. Throughout chapters 2 and 3, I will be inserting screenshots taken from the Final Fantasy games which will offer a visual portrayal of the events being discussed throughout the chapters. Each screenshot will be labelled underneath with an appropriate description of what is being represented through the image.
