| Abstract: | This is a thesis which analyses four original compositions which have been submitted as a dissertation. These are the following works: Fantasia Avventurosa – an orchestral work; Midnight Sketches – a work for chamber ensemble; Vjolin Marid – a work for solo soprano accompanied by string orchestra with an obbligato part on the first violin; and Echoes of Thought – a work for solo acoustic guitar. Chapter 1 explains the idea behind the orchestral work, its energy and sense of exploration, which may lead to unexpected journeys and destinations. The orchestra is the medium to express all that is contained within this whole idea of adventure Chapter 2 deals with the chamber work which is composed for a somewhat strange combination of instruments in order to bring out the macabre element of these same Midnight Sketches. The vocal work is analysed in chapter 3. This work includes a Maltese poem by Rużar Briffa which talks about an old violinist who used to be popular for his important role in the music scene when he was young. But now he is old and sick, and he can barely hold his violin anymore. Finally, Chapter 4 tackles the solo work for solo acoustic guitar, a relatively straightforward piece of music which is also about the search for a deeper understanding of oneself by trying to access the human mind as a cause of an ‘echo of thoughts’. This stimulates man to investigate within himself and the music is meant to highlight this particular journey. |
