Abstract: | There was a time when the most popular exegesis of Jn 1:14 placed considerable emphasis upon the etymology of the verb skenoun, 'to dwell in a tent'. The allusion to nomadic life contained in the term made it a natural and effective symbol of the temporary presence of the enfleshed Word among His own. Many of the older commentaries explicated the verse in this way. So, too, do some of the more recent commentaries, as well as the dictionary of Arndt-Gingrich. |
