Abstract

Cassar discusses the language situation on the Maltese islands and how the Italian language is viewed favorably over the Maltese language even though the latter has become the official national language and is being taught in schools. The author draws comparisons to much larger nations who experienced the same diffuculties, where their language was regarded as the language of the common people and was not used among the prominent people of that country, who instead chose to use another foreign language.
