Abstract: The negative mental health effects in women experiencing domestic violence have been acknowledged, but it seems that the area of both domestic violence and mental health combined has been ignored, especially in our country. This dissertation will look at the mental health effects on women experiencing domestic violence from the point of view of women themselves and that of professionals. This dissertation evaluates the domestic violence and mental health services already available, for the identification of strengths and weakness of both sectors. The mental health effects and evaluation of services are studied through the use of interviews with service users, questionnaires and interviews with social workers, an interview with a psychiatrist and correspondence with an international policy initiative which addresses both areas of mental health and domestic violence. This dissertation also gives a review of the literature available in this regards together with the Maltese law affecting this client group and how this can hinder or assist clients. At present, no service in Malta seems to address both needs. This dissertation points out the need for the creation of a new service, or for more intensive collaboration between professionals, for women experiencing both issues to have their needs addressed. It seems that the current services are addressing mainly one aspect, that is, domestic violence or mental health, depending on the area one works in, and the other issue is ignored. The reasons suggest lack of training or else professionals view the area as not part of their work. Findings further seem to suggest that major work needs to be implemented in the mental health sector, a sector which was highly criticised by service users. From these findings the conclusion leads to the need for more training and collaboration between the services, leading hopefully to joint projects between the different sectors and professionals. The implications would be having a more holistic approach to this client group, which seems to be lacking to a certain extent especially in particular service.
