Abstract: Strictly speaking, one cannot talk of relations "between" the Order of Malta and Tripoli, since for the period in question, 1530-1551, Tripoli was part of the dominions of the Order; but one can talk of the place Tripoli filled in the activities and ambitions of the Knights of Malta. To appreciate the full meaning of this, one must first look at the formative forces that brought this remarkable crusading institution into being.
