Abstract: The birth of Maltese as a written language does not date earlier than the sixteenth century when it was first referred to in books as a separate tongue; but conflicting opinions had then been widely expressed as to its origin and the best mode for writing it. The prevailing opinion among the most reputed scholars of the day was that the Maltese Tongue was of a Punic character judging from the first colony recorded by history and archaeological relics as having inhabited the Island. The belief that it has been it direct heritage of the old Phoenician language has, since the dawn of the 19th century, been relegated by modern orientalists to the corners of legendary tradition.
