Abstract: Charles Debono, curator of the national war museum, explains the role played by Malta during World War 1. Many events happened during year 1916, including the introduction of the "the Military Service Bill", and several naval operations that led to the sinking of several British ships (like the Abelia, the Persia and and the Glengyle) on their way to Malta. A selection of less known true stories of Malta at war when the "George Cross Island" played a vital role in the fight for Europe's freedom from Nazism and Fascism. They are dedicated to all those who fell, suffered or fought in this struggle and to those who strive for peace
