Abstract: In this article, Michael Cassar describes the first mast crane in Malta, known as 'Maċina' (derived from the Italian macchina - machine). The Maċina was in service in 1629 and therefore, it is part of the industrial heritage of Malta. As sailing ships grew in size, masts could only be installed, repaired or removed by specialised masting sheers. The Maċina, based in Senglea, was renamed Sheer Bastion by the British, and the two appellations were used concurrently. In 1864, the sheers were replaced with iron beams.
