A detailed study was carried out on pests and diseases of the olive tree in 31 different localities in the Maltese Islands (18 in Malta, 11 in Gozo and 2 in Comino). The work was mainly carried out between June 2006 and April 2007. A total of 16 species of insects, 3 species of eryophid mites, 2 fungal diseases and 1 bacterial disease were recorded. Two insects, the olive thrip, Liothrips oleae and the pollinia scale, Pollinia pollini and three eriophid mites, Ditrymacus athiassella, Oxycenus maxwelli and Tegelophus hassani were recorded for the first time from Malta. Additionally, five hymenopteran parasites were also recorded for the first time from Malta. These include Psyttalia concolor, Pnigalio agruales and Eupelmus urozonus as parasites of the olive fly, Bactrocera oleae; Angitia armillata as a parasite of the olive moth, Prays oleae; and Eupelmus sp. which was associated with the olive bark midge, Reseliella oleisuga. Aleurolobus olivinus and Reselliela oleisuga were previously recorded on the basis of a single record. Otiorynchus moriger, a weevil endemic to the Maltese Islands was here recorded for the first time as a pest of olives.en_GB
