A few weeks before the outbreak of the First World War, the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), air arm of the Royal Navy, was established. Malta proved its worth in the construction of Flying Boat Planes at Kalafrana Seaplane Base, and also in the construction of Balloon Units at Manoel Island (Lazzerretto Creek). The end of the First World War brought a gradual run-down at Kalafrana Station and of Wing No. 6 and during 1919, the seaplane carriers returned to Britain and the Royal Naval Air Service was merged with the Royal Flying Corps to form the Royal Air Force.en_GB
