Abstract: | Following part one (link in description) this excerpt off Chapter four from Yosanne Vella’s book explores the complex relationship between religion and magic in 18th Century Malta. Supported by case studies, the author reveals to what extent ‘witchcraft’ was spread among the local women who turned to sorcery as means to help themselves or others. Irrespective of the form (portions, spells, curses, etc.) or intent (i.e: healers), in the eyes of the Christian Church it was only ever a negative force and a very serious crime. Vella refers to the famous treatise on witchcraft; ‘The Mallues Maleficarum’ (1486) by two priests who denunciated women who cured without academic knowledge. Considering the limitations within women's entitlements at the time, this meant all female healers were subject to public condemnation. To others in the community, led by superstitions and fear, this was a means to attribute their failures and misfortunes. Vella, once again compels the reader to re-consider the female condition in 18th Century Malta & the different ways in which women and girls tried to escape the roles society imposed on them. The text is accompanied by a series of photographs and an introduction to A/Prof. Vella. |
