Abstract: The rapid increase in the size of the prison population, the increased number of intravenous drug users (IDUs) in prisons and the increased awareness of the existence of infectious diseases necessitates adjustments to medical and public health policies. Strategies for the identification, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases have to be developed if appropriate interventions are to be offered. This paper discusses the initiatives that have been taken in this regard in Malta and proposes a series of interventions that should be made available in future.
