Abstract: An examination of St. Luke's Hospital admission trends over the past three decades, of children suffering from Acute Asthma, is disturbing. Since the mid-sixties there has been a forty fold increase (Fig. 1) in the number of children admitted for the treatment of Acute Asthma. It is of little consolation that a strikingly similar increase in the trend of hospital admission rates for childhood asthma has been reported in other countries. During the year 1987 the total number of children who visited the paediatric emergency department at St. Luke's Hospital was 6,586; 2,437 (37%) of these were of children suffering from Acute Asthma.
