Nikola Kottoner was born in Mallorca, Spain in 1605 and he joined the Order of St John at the age of 22. He was appointed Grandmaster in 1663, only three days after the death of his brother, Rafel. The rich Spaniard funded the fortifications around Cospicua and helped the poor population of Malta survive. When the plague hit Malta, he exercised all his efforts into containing it.en_GB
