Abstract: Diseases of the cardiovascular system and in particular those falling within the definition of ischaemic heart disease (IHD, coronary heart disease) covering a group of clinical syndromes that include angina pectoris, acute myocardial infarction (AMI), asymptomatic myocardial ischaemia and sudden ischaemic death, are together the commonest cause of death in Western society. To determine the importance of blood cholesterol, smoking, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption, family history, age, sex and social class as coronary risk factors, a study was made of admissions to the Coronary Care Unit of St Luke's Hospital - Malta for non-fatal AMI.
