Abstract: Mosta is situated in an area that is low-lying relative to the nearby Rabat-Dingli uplands. This low elevation is mainly a consequence of the downthrow caused by the Great Fault which strikes across the northern border of the town. Several other geological faults of varying expression characterize the area resulting in a heterogeneous local geology. The geological effects of these faults , associated with the general SW-NE tilt of the Maltese islands, have combined to give rise to the characteristic terrain of the area.
