Abstract: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal condition which impinges on the individual’s quality of life in various aspects. (Ford et al., 2017). The aim of this study was to explore the experience of individuals who are suffering from IBS whilst also being University students. By conducting this research, it serves to raise awareness and provide better insight into the challenges that students suffering from IBS have to face on a daily basis. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with University of Malta students who suffer from IBS regarding their own personal experience with the condition. The transcripts were analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. Six superordinate themes emerged, each consisting of various subordinate themes. Findings suggest that living with IBS affects the individuals in various domains of their life. Participants found that the stress of student life could have a detrimental effect on their condition, and identified a vicious cycle that was fueled by anxiety and worry which could further aggravate their symptoms. They also pinpointed both negative and positive ways in which the condition can influence their wellbeing. Furthermore, the need for proper education and awareness regarding IBS to be aimed towards the sufferers’ family members, friends and University students and staff was highlighted during this study. This should include informing better ways in which support can be given for IBS sufferers.
