Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of children in the criminal justice system in Malta from a professional perspective. A qualitative research design using semi-structured interviews was undertaken with a sample of five professionals comprised of police officers and social workers. The data obtained was analysed using thematic analysis and four main themes were identified: Interviewing techniques, Awareness of Child’s Experience, Trauma and Occupational Stress. The data analysed highlighted the different approaches that are used in forensic interviewing and support from the initial process when the reports are made, to building relationships with the children involved, providing support and dealing with occupational stresses. Recommendations included supportive training in forensic interviewing to help ease the burden of the professionals and consequently the children they deal with.
