Abstract: | Nicolaus Steno was particularly interested in the so-called glossopetrae or tongue-stones, some of which from Malta's soil had found their way into the scientific collections of princes and scholars, but whose nature and origin were at the time not understood. Steno was one of the first to realise that they were fossil shark's teeth, and this discovery contributed to one of his great achievements: the laying of the foundations for the modern science of Geology. |
