Abstract: In the first studies of tissue metabolism, metabolic reactions in cells and tissues were determined and then quantitative measurements of enzymes evolved. More recently the distribution of enzymes within the cell has been studied. This has been made possible by the production of more sophisticated apparatus. The knowledge of the localisation of enzymes within the cell in relation to its structure is very important for the understanding of the functioning of the cell.
