| Abstract: | Malta's sister island of Gozo provides a classic case of the battle between 'conservation' and 'development'. There is a need to protect the outstanding quality of its landscape, which is characterized by an intimate link between its physical and cultural elements, and there are also insistent demands by the local people for economic development and diversification which will raise their modest living standards and enable them to remain on the island. |
