Validation of a method of analysis to measure nitrates in water : APHA-AWWA spectrophotometric screening method 4500-NO(to the power of three) (B).

Abstract

Reliable analytical methods are required for compliance with national and international regulations in all areas of analysis. It is accordingly internationally recognized that a laboratory must take appropriate measures to ensure that it is capable of providing data of required quality. Method validation is one of the measures universally recognized as a necessary part of a comprehensive system of quality assurance in analytical chemistry. Nitrate is one of the most problematic and widespread of a vast number of potential water contaminants. It is one of the contaminants most frequently detected in water supplies. The APHA -A WW A Spectrophotometric method of analysis, for measurement of N03 concentration in water, is a technique used for screening samples that have low organic matter contents. This technique is based on the direct ultraviolet spectrophotometric nitrate measurement at 220nm. It has become an APHAA WW A standard analytical method for the measurement of N03 in potable water supplies. This dissertation is an attempt to study whether this method is fit for N03 measurement in bottled water (non-sparkling), local tap water and local ground water.
