Abstract: Introduction: Ingrowing toenail is almost exclusively a condition of the great toe and thus is rarely seen in the lesser toenails or finger nails. The occurrence rate is highest among young people with equal distribution among males and females. An ingrowing toenail begins as a localised inflammatory reaction to external forces on the margin of the nail plate. Once penetration of the epithelial tissue occurs infection ensues, abscess, chronic drainage, inflammation and granulation. Background study: This is the condition when a spike shoulder or serrated edge of the nail has pierced the epidermis of the sulcus and penetrated the dermal tissue. Initially it causes little inconvenience but as the nail grows the offending portion penetrates further to the tissue and promotes an acute inflammation in the surrounding soft-tissue which after becomes infected. There are two different treatments. First the podiatrist has to deal with the infection by giving antibiotics. After a week he can start the treatment by choosing between conservative or operative treatment. This study will analyse which sources of treatment offers the most successful removal of nail. Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to investigate the cause and the treatments and if possibly try to use safe and treatments which doesn't have side effects. It is also important to use the most effective treatment for the patient Literature review: Treatment effectiveness depends on the patient's general health and the severity of the condition.
