Urban development of Swieqi : a spatial and perspective analysis

Abstract

The focus of this research is in the area of urban growth and redevelopment. This study is a much needed research, given that as none other has been done on the town of Swieqi before. It seeks to analyse the pattern of growth and development of the town, as it grew from a small village into an urban town. The research approach adopted in this dissertation includes field studies, map analysis, the creation of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) maps and their analysis, and interviews. The findings and main conclusions drawn from this study show how Swieqi emerged from the town's periphery and along the perimeter of the main road of the town. It also reveals the present and future impacts of contemporary redevelopments according to stakeholders in Swieqi. This dissertation recommends that future research and studies continue to be carried out on the growing urban town.
