Abstract: Maslow believed that our basic needs for physiological survival are shelter and food. Once these needs are met, individuals are then capable to address the need for safety and security. When safety and security have been guaranteed, belonging and love become a priority. These needs are usually found within families, friendships and in the community. It is only when we are anchored in a community that we develop selfesteem and assure ourselves of our own worth as individuals. Young people are in search for membership to fulfil this need and they form groups when other groups like the family cannot provide the skills and roles they are looking for to strengthen their participation in a wider society. Young people might join a group because it is enjoyable, exciting, or it satisfies their needs for affiliation and companionship. The aim of this research is to explore young people’s needs, by focusing on sense of belonging and how this can be catered for by youth organisations. For this purpose a qualitative approach was adopted and data was collected through interviews and focus groups. The interviews were conducted with the group leaders about their perceptions and ideas on this topic and the focus groups were conducted with groups of young people that were encouraged to share their needs and thoughts on sense of belonging. Amongst various needs the young people identify, relationships and sense of belonging are a priority. The youth leaders are aware of the needs of their members, however, the idea and importance of sense of belonging is blurred. The organisations have a great potential to provide for this sense of belonging.
