Abstract: Irregular Migration is a phenomenon with which various European states have struggled. Recent years have been turbulent on this front, with conflicts in North and Central Africa, as well as in the Middle East intensifying, generating mass displacement towards mainland Europe, either on foot or by sea. This influx of migrants has raised many questions on the asylum frameworks of member states and the European Union at large. This study will evaluate the instruments of the Common European Asylum System, which aim to harmonise asylum procedures across the Union. Subsequently, it will provide an in-depth evaluation of the approach taken by Malta and Hungary towards irregular migrants. The study will outline how Malta has been more proactive with regards to irregular migration, while Hungary has been much more hostile, with its behaviour being criticised by the EU and other organisations.
