Abstract: Come November, a cycle of paintings is set up in the main nave of the Milan Duomo. The tempera on canvas images making up this cycle celebrate the life of Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584), Milan’s home-grown Saint. Popularly known as the ‘quadroni’, they are each year hung between the pillars of the Gothic nave, effectively transforming the church into one majestic Borromean heroum (Fig. 2). The cycle was designed by Giovanni Battista Crespi (1573-1632), nicknamed il Cerano, but was actually carried out by a group of artists of varying talent.
