Abstract: This project is designed to assess the Maltese radiographers' perceptions on role extension and development. The role of the radiographer worldwide is continuously changing. This fact prompted the researcher to conduct this study. The research was conducted by means of a questionnaire, which was distributed to the radiographers working in the radiology department of St. Luke's Hospital in Malta. All information was collected and analyzed and where possible it was compared to other similar studies done abroad and locally. The results obtained show that the majority of Maltese radiographers acknowledge the importance of role extension and role development. However, implementation of new and advanced roles is limited in the local institution. This study has shown that radiographers recognize the advantages that come with new and advanced roles. Moreover, it was also observed that radiographers are aware that adequate training is required in order to be competent and professional in their potential new roles. On the basis of the findings recommendations were proposed with the aim of introducing role extension and role development in the future.
